Samba at Tampines Rovers in Singapore
We’re officially underway with the 80 experiments. Starting at Tampines Rovers FC, a professional football club in Singapore.
"How do you get hired?" is one of the most frequently asked questions.
For the first experiment of my adventure it was simple. Dennis Verbaas — a friend I used to play football with back in Holland — works in Singapore at Tampines Rovers FC. The moment he heard about my challenge, he invited me over. Of course, I was even quicker to say yes!
Dennis is responsible for marketing. The club just contracted former superstar Jermaine Pennant. And opened a youth academy with two times FIFA World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho. So, momentum is here. Time for some samba in the office.
With the Singaporean league starting in a week, they still had to make a sponsorship proposal. In an attempt to use this deadline to our advantage, I proposed to design an infographic: A clear, simple and elegant one-pager. Instead of a fancy 16-page magazine, no one reads anyway.
They liked my idea. So no time to get used to being back in an office after traveling for two months. I started sketching right away. At lunchtime, we went to the canteen. Till date, I don't know what I ate there, but it was tasty...
Dennis lives in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. I stayed with him in his apartment. This meant we had to go through customs every day. I did this for two days. But getting new stamps every day, my passport filled up quickly.
With more travel in mind, and because I worked with a Dutch designer in Amsterdam on the infographic anyway, I stayed in Johor Bahru as a real digital knowmad for the other three days.
This was also supposed to save me time. Driving on the left side of the road, I confidently took off, in Dennis his car. Obviously, I ended up getting completely lost, spending over an hour on the road.. It was fun though, and I eventually found my way to an espresso and an iced americano!
At the end of the week, we had gone through a lot of versions of the infographic. It was something they had never done before. Luckily, everyone was really happy with the sponsorship proposal infographic. A BIG thank you to Esther Rookhuijzen and her team at Jaafdesign in Amsterdam for doing the graphical design!
Of course, you can't work at a football club, without attending a game.
Looking back, I'm excited the project is officially underway. Thank you all at Tampines, and I wish the Stags all the best for this season!
Looking forward, I'm even more excited my next experiment will be at Duane Morris & Selvam. How did they hire me? The chairman of Tampines Rovers, Krishna Ramachandra, is one of the most generous people I've met and also managing director at this law firm!
For this experiment I will actually stay in Singapore for a week. Let's do this!
Ps; Sorry if I did not reply to your message yet. I'm getting so many messages (which I like, so keep it up), but I will reply to everything. I promise!
